By the Way

18 October 2013 - 31 October 2013

By the Way features works by 7 artists and photographers from across the East and West Midlands. Comprising photographers David Severn, Sian Stammers, Julian Hughes, Phil Harris, Helen Saunders with artists Shaun Morris and Wayne Burrows these works meander through landscape peripheral to the city : fringe landscape, edgelands, wasteland – land off the beaten track and by the wayside. Land often deemed unlovely and unimportant that slips through the rigid categories of urban and rural : post industrial canals in the flicker of night, woodland fringing the dual carriageway, ‘boring fields’ beside the city and tracks along the contours of buried coal seams. Places in transition that carry a very particular Englishness.

Work is also featured from Midlands writers and poets – with text writ large on the gallery walls.

The exhibition is supported by an offsite multi-media project developed by freelance learning curator Bo Olawoye exploring several neglected urban edging into rural spaces around Nottingham. Communities living in these areas will respond to these ‘forgotten landscapes’ through photography, film, text or spoken word creating a contemporary archive.

This project is supported by the Arts Council of England.
